German MPs released a damning report into a series of neo-Nazi murders, saying incompetence across the board led to failures in investigating the NSU far-right terrorist cell.

The 1,000 page report highlighted 47 areas for improvement for the police with one MP warning that the danger posed by militant neo-Nazi groups must never again be underestimated.

"We have to put in the heads of all our personnel, especially the police, different thought patterns, more intercultural thinking, away from discrimination, and this we can only achieve through training," explained Wolfgang Wieland, a member of the NSU fact finding committee.

The police's handling of the case was widely criticised, as the neo-Nazi cell was uncovered by mistake when the ring leader Beate Zschaepe handed herself in after two members were found dead by police following a botched bank robbery.

Zschaepe is currently on trial for the murders of 10 people, mostly ethnic Turks over the course of seven years.
