At the 2026 Munich Security Conference, U.S.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a sharp assessment of the United Nations, arguing that while the UN retains “tremendous potential,” it has failed to address the world’s most urgent crises.
Rubio stated that:
• The UN could not end the war in Gaza — instead crediting American leadership for securing the release of captives and a fragile truce.
• It failed to stop the war in Ukraine — saying U.S.
engagement brought the sides to the table.
• It was powerless to halt Iran’s nuclear program.
• It could not address the security threat posed by Venezuela’s regime.
Rubio argued that in an imperfect world, resolutions and diplomatic abstractions are not enough when regimes openly violate international law.
