The pushback to the

The pushback to the Heroes Act is strong in the Senate, and Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that the bill wouldn't pass as is. Possible outcomes include morphing into a different aid package through bipartisan negotiation. It could also fail, with a new proposal taking its place. Or, it could dissipate altogether until a future proposal appears and the process begins anew. The White House has indicated it would support a second stimulus check of some sort, according to CNBC, though Trump called the Heroes Act "DOA".

The Heroes Act includes a wide range of benefits, such as a second direct payment to individuals and households of up to $1,200 per family member, according to a fact sheet from the House Appropriations Committee (PDF). Here are some breakdowns.

Individuals: Under the proposed law, an eligible person would receive $1,200 if their adjusted gross income, or AGI, from their 2019 federal tax filing or 2018 filing (if you haven't filed taxes yet) was less than $75,000. As with the current stimulus package, payments would incrementally decrease as your AGI goes up. A chart from the Congressional Research Service shows proposed payments by income (PDF).

Children and dependents: Each dependent would qualify for a $1,200 payment. That includes college students, children over 17, disabled relatives and a taxpayer's parent. This detail differs from the CARES Act, which provided a $500 payment just for children age 16 and under. Under the bill (PDF), dependents would receive retroactive payments to compensate for being passed over in the first stimulus package.

Families: Households would qualify for a maximum payment of $6,000 total, capped at five family members at $1,200 apiece. Your scale of your payment allowance would begin to decrease as you surpass an AGI of $150,000 for married couples filing jointly, or $112,500 for heads of household.

Noncitizens: To qualify for a payment under the current CARES Act, US residents are required to have a Social Security number. With the Heroes Act, those without a Social Security number could instead use an individual taxpayer identification number, which will allow noncitizens to qualify for a payment. As with the stipulation for dependents, people who qualify in this category would receive retroactive payments from the first stimulus package.

What else does the Heroes Act propose?
The Heroes Act, officially the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, includes a handful of additional measures to provide support for individuals and businesses.

Unemployment benefits: The bill would carry over the current enhanced unemployment benefit of $600 per week (on top of states' typical unemployment payout) to January 2021.

Payroll protection: The Heroes Act would expand the employee retention tax credit to help employers keep workers on the payroll.

Funds for essential workers: Under the bill, state and local governments would receive $1 trillion to pay salaries for first responders, health care workers, teachers and other essential workers in danger of losing their jobs. The bill would also fund hazard pay for workers with high-risk jobs.

Coronavirus testing, tracing and treatment: The bill would include $75 billion to provide for expanded testing and contact tracing.

Support for businesses: The bill would bolster the Payroll Protection Plan, which provides payroll assistance to small businesses, and provide additional funding for the US Postal Service.

Parts of New York can expect to reopen at the end of the week but New York City will remain closed until June unless 'something miraculous happens' because there still aren't enough hospital beds free and not enough contact tracers have been hired.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at his daily briefing that parts of the state were ready to reopen after May 15, the end of his statewide lockdown, after reducing the spread enough.

In New York City, the major indicators of infection are all low, but there still are not enough free hospital beds in the system to meet Cuomo's requirement of keeping 30 percent free.

The daily death toll has lowered to 161, giving a total of more than 21,000, and the infection total is more than 335,000.

In New York City, there have been more than 177,000 cases and more than 14,000 deaths.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday morning that the city would likely stay closed until June unless 'something miraculous happens' as a result.

'June is when we’re going to potentially be able to make some real changes if we continue our progress. This conversation, end of May, beginning of June is when we’re going to be able to start filling in the blanks.

'Unless something miraculous happens we’re going into June,' de Blasio said.

He added: 'We have our daily indicators. The state has their indicators. We’re all working together…they’re all valuable measures.

'By both sets of measures, we’re clearly not ready yet,' he said.

However a spokesman for the mayor's office clarified later to DailyMail.com that the 'indicator' holding the city up was the lack of free hospital beds.

The city currently only has 22 percent of its ICU beds available and 25 percent of its hospital beds available. The city also needs 2,250 contact tracers before it can reopen and not even 1,000 have been hired yet.

We haven’t met the hospital capacity goals yet. We would like to see more people discharged from our hospitals.

'Also, the number of individuals in critical care remains high.

'We are in the hundreds for tracers and rapidly hiring and building out our infrastructure to meet the statewide goals,' they said.

The number of ICU patients suspected to have COVID across New York City went down from 540 to 537 on Saturday.

The number of people admitted to hospitals dropped from 69 on Friday to 55 - well below the 168 maximum under Cuomo's requirement to reopen.

And the percentage of people testing positive for the virus dropped from 17 percent to 13 percent of the city's population.

'This is exactly the kind of day we want to see,' de Blasio told reporters.
Now let’s see if we can stretch a number of these days together and that will be a signal,' to start loosening up restrictions.

'We have real work to do to get there,' the mayor said.

The reopening will start with manufacturing and construction businesses reopening with social distancing in place.

The second phase will allow 'all retail' to offer curbside pick-up.

Cuomo has not given any indication of how long it will take to transition from phase one of the reopening to phase two or to the two other phases beyond that, saying only that it will have to be done while watching how infection rates are increasing or not as it's happening but that it should happen 'as fast' as it can.

The third phase is reopening restaurants and fourth will be entertainment and education. He has not outlined where gyms or beauty services fall into the list, nor has he specified when bars will reopen.

Professional services, financial services and real estate are all in phase two and Cuomo says it will come down to the practices they put in place to stop the spread to mean they can open quickly and stay open.

'As fast as you can reopen, reopen. Just watch the dials.

'It will be determined by the facts and the numbers as you go along. You're turning a valve, increasing economic activity.

Will a one-time $1,2

Will a one-time $1,200 stimulus check be enough to pull the U.S. economy out of the doldrums? No, according to Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH). That's why they introduced a bill in Congress that would give every qualifying American over the age of 16 a stimulus payment of up to $2,000 each month for up to a year (plus $500 for up to three children).

If the Emergency Money for the People Act became law, the $2,000 monthly payments would be guaranteed for at least six months. They would then be renewed for another six months, unless the employment-to-population ratio for people ages 16 and older returns to the pre-coronavirus employment level of 60%. These payments would not count as income, so they would not affect your eligibility for any income-based federal or state government assistance programs

Unlike the CARES Act, which authorized the round of stimulus checks being sent out now, the new bill would provide payments to college students and adults with disabilities even if they are claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return. For people who don't have a bank account or a home address to receive a check, the new bill would also allow people to get paid by direct deposit, check, pre-paid debit card, or even mobile money platforms such as Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal.

Eligibility for the $2,000 Payments
Eligibility for the $2,000 monthly payments under the Emergency Money for the People Act would be much broader than for the current CARES Act stimulus payments. To qualify for the monthly payments under the bill, you would have to be:

A citizen or resident of the U.S.; and

At least 16 years old as of January 1, 2020.

The citizenship or residency requirement would be satisfied if a person is physically present in the U.S. continuously since January 27, 2020, and stays in the U.S. throughout the payment period. (A person would fail to maintain a continuous presence in the U.S. if he or she left the country for any period exceeding 90 days or for any periods, in the aggregate, exceeding 180 days.)

Total Amount of Monthly Payments
As mentioned above, monthly payments would be up to $2,000 per person ($4,000 for joint filers), plus an additional $500 per month per child (up to a maximum of $1,500 per month). However, the monthly amount would be phased out for people with a 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) over $130,000 ($260,000 for joint filers). The phase-out rate would be 5% for each $1,000 over the threshold amount.

Likelihood of Passage
There hasn't been a lot of interest for the bill so far on Capitol Hill. However, that could change now that Congress finished replenishing the CARES Act's Payroll Protection Program for small business loans. Nevertheless, even if interest among lawmakers does pick up, the bill would still have an uphill battle to passage. It appears as if Senate Republicans want to proceed more slowly on additional stimulus measures going forward. Stay tuned!

The USNS Comfort med

The USNS Comfort medical ship moves up the Hudson [+]
AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES
In New York and elsewhere across America, physicians and nurses are overwhelmed with patients suffering from COVID-19. “Nurses Die, Doctors Sick and Panic Rises on Virus Front Lines,” read a recent headline in the New York Times. Relaxed immigration policies could provide a vital boost to efforts to save American lives, according to analysts.

limitations today that would prevent a foreign physician from

physician exempt from that limit. Academic medical centers and nonprofit teaching hospitals are exempt from the H-1B cap, while many community hospitals and other healthcare organizations are not.

Foreign physicians also face restrictions under the immigration laws. For example, even though most states will give a physician licensed in Canada a medical license in their state, the immigration regulations require additional tests – the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). During the crisis, the exams had to be canceled because they must be offered in-person.

Anderson: What are the practical obstacles for foreign nurses?

Stock: Nurses face even stricter limits than physicians, as most nursing positions are not eligible for the temporary H-1B visa. As such, employers needing nurses need to sponsor them directly for permanent residence, a process that takes 18 months minimum under normal circumstances. In addition, strict limits on the number of skills-based immigrants (employment-based green cards) per year the United States have created a -long quota backlog, meaning many nurses would take three years or more to be able to get to the front of the line and be able to immigrate.

Anderson: What are the issues facing foreign doctors currently working in the United States to go work in New York City or another area with an urgent need for doctors?

Stock: Doctors on H-1B visas are restricted to working for the particular employer who sponsored their visa, and even that employer cannot send the physician to work in a different area of employment without complying with Department of Labor regulations. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a binding precedent that merely changing an employee’s location requires a whole new H-1B filing, meaning that a physician would face major bureaucratic hurdles to change locations in response to the current crisis.

Anderson: Aren’t there foreign physicians who are treating American COVID-19 patients right are stuck in such long backlogs they may never receive a green card? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to help these physicians secure green cards (permanent residence) and if they die fighting to save American patients to guarantee help for their surviving family members?

Stock: You’re correct that thousands of physicians from India are currently trapped in immigration limbo, waiting for ten years or more for their “place in line” to be reached due to green card quotas. During that time, they continue to be on temporary visas, and their family members’ status is dependent on their status. If one of those physicians becomes infected treating patients and passes away, the family will be left without immigration status.

It’s nearly impossib

It’s nearly impossible to practice “social distancing” with the partners with whom we share homes – and beds. But what are the risks associated with intimacy in the time of coronavirus? Three experts weigh in.

Is Covid-19 sexually transmissible?
Dr Jessica Justman: We’re not seeing patterns that indicate sexual transmission. It’s primarily spread through respiratory droplets. And touching contaminated surfaces is thought to be the secondary mode of transmission.

Dr Carlos Rodríguez-Díaz: There is no evidence that the Covid-19 can be transmitted via either vaginal or anal intercourse. However, kissing is a very common practice during sexual intercourse, and the virus can be transmitted via saliva. Therefore, the virus can be transmitted by kissing. There is also evidence of oral-fecal transmission of the Covid-19 and that implies that analingus may represent a risk for infection.

So is it OK to have sex?
Justman: If you or your partner is a Covid-19 case, the advice is to steer clear of each other as much as possible. In fact, the New York City department of health has guidelines on this. If you’re a possible or confirmed case you should isolate yourself, ideally in a private residence until seven days after the illness began. You need to have had no fever for 72 hours, without using ibuprofen or anything that would mask your fever, and your respiratory symptoms should be improving.

Dr Julia Marcus: But for people who don’t have symptoms and don’t have any recent likely exposure and have been staying close to home, I think that, if it’s within your own household, it’s a different story. If you live with a regular sexual partner and you don’t have any symptoms, or likely exposure, sex might actually be a really great way to have fun, stay connected and relieve anxiety during this potentially stressful time.

What about new partners?
Marcus: The recommendation right now is that we try to stay home as much as we can and really only interact with people for things that are essential, like groceries. And even when we do that, try to keep some physical distance of about 6ft from other people. That would definitely make sex a challenge.

Rodríguez-Díaz: Sexual intercourse may decrease during the next few weeks, but other forms of expressing eroticism, such as sexting, video-calls, reading erotica and masturbation will continue to be options.

How can someone keep sex toys clean?
Rodríguez-Díaz: Just use soap and water.

We don’t know how long this pandemic will last. What do you say to someone who’s single now and doesn’t want to wait months before they can be intimate with someone?
Rodríguez-Díaz: If you’re concerned about practicing social distancing for too long, make sure that you and the people you know practice social distancing now. The sooner we do it, the sooner we’ll see a decline in new infections, and the sooner we will be able to change our practice of socializing. Rather than focusing on the future, we need to focus on the present.

Use these couple of weeks to channel your energy, explore yourself, maybe think about what it is that you’re looking for. And you can do that by yourself. It can be a great opportunity to explore other ways of engaging with new sexual partners that you can meet online by sexting or using video calls.

Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. People will no longer be tested for the virus unless they are in hospital.

Is the virus being transmitted from one person to another?
China’s national health commission confirmed human-to-human transmission in January. There is now extensive human to human transmission across the world.

How many people have been affected?
As of 15 March, more than 182,000 people have been infected in more than 80 countries, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

There have been over 7,500 deaths globally. Just over 3,000 of those deaths have occurred in mainland China. More than 79,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus.

Why is this worse than normal influenza, and how worried are the experts?
We don’t yet know how dangerous the new coronavirus is, and we won’t know until more data comes in, but estimates have ranged from well below 1% in the young to over 3% among those who are elderly or have underlying health conditions. Seasonal flu typically has a mortality rate below 1% and is thought to cause about 400,000 deaths each year globally. Sars had a death rate of more than 10%.

Another key unknown is how contagious the coronavirus is. A crucial difference is that unlike flu, there is no vaccine for the new coronavirus, which means it is more difficult for vulnerable members of the population – elderly people or those with existing respiratory or immune problems – to protect themselves. Hand-washing and avoiding other people if you feel unwell are important. One sensible step is to get the flu vaccine, which will reduce the burden on health services if the outbreak turns into a wider epidemic.

Have there been other coronaviruses?
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers) are both caused by coronaviruses that came from animals. In 2002, Sars spread virtually unchecked to 37 countries, causing global panic, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing more than 750. Mers appears to be less easily passed from human to human, but has greater lethality, killing 35% of about 2,500 people who have been infected.

But this was 56 percent lower than the same period a year ago when Chinese investors had pumped in over $30 billion into the U.S. housing market.

The Chinese have already been pulling back their investments in the U.S. housing market as regulations have tightened in China to control the outflow of cash from the country. The trade war between the U.S. and China is another reason why their housing market investments have declined. But now, the coronavirus epidemic could deal yet another blow to Chinese investments in the U.S. housing market.

Realtor.com chief economist Danielle Hale pointed out:

You have less incentive to buy real estate if it’s unclear if and when you’ll get to visit the property. In the short term, the virus could dampen [luxury] sales further.

There have already been instances when Chinese investors have been forced to back out of deals in the U.S. housing market thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. A broker at Douglas Elliman Real Estate told MarketWatch:

There’s a lot of uncertainty and fear. I was supposed to meet some groups of Chinese investors in March and April. At the moment, I don’t think they’re able to travel.

U.S. Housing Market, Housing market, Housing Market Crash
Source: Twitter
The travel ban by President Trump on foreign nationals who have been to China in light of the coronavirus outbreak is going to further complicate things for anyone from that country looking to invest in the U.S. housing market. So, don’t be surprised to see a drop in home sales as the Chinese reportedly account for 20 percent of the foreign buyers who buy homes in the U.S.

Coronavirus And Limited Inventories Could Pop The Bubble
There is enough evidence pointing out that the U.S. housing market is a bubble. Low mortgage rates have encouraged buyers to get into the market even though wage growth has lagged home price growth by a wide margin. Prices have increased as inventories are at multi-year lows.

U.S. Housing Market, Housing market, Housing Market Crash
Source: Twitter
Realtor.com reports that the housing market inventory in the U.S. was down 13.6 percent in January. This was the largest annual decline seen in four years. What’s more, the report states that the listing volume of new properties was also down 10.6 percent year over year, indicating that the inventory shortage could be here to stay.

This severe shortage of homes for sale in the U.S. housing market has the potential to price buyers out in 2020. Realtor.com chief economist Hale adds:

Homebuyers took advantage of low mortgage rates and stable listing prices to drive sales higher at the end of 2019, further depleting the already limited inventory of homes for sale. With fewer homes coming up for sale, we’ve hit another new low of for sale-listings in January.

This is a challenging sign for the large numbers of Millennial and Gen Z buyers coming into the housing market this homebuying season as it implies the potential for rising prices and fast-selling homes—a competitive market.

As it turns out, homes in the U.S. are getting more and more expensive with each passing month. The median price of a home listed for sale went up by 3.4 percent in January to $299,995. For some perspective, wage growth stood at 3.1 percent during January. If the U.S. housing market fails to add new supply quickly and prices keep spiking, buyers might start pulling out of the market.

At the same time, the pull-out by Chinese buyers on account of the coronavirus outbreak will be another headwind for the market as billions of dollars could go out from the demand side. These two factors could dent housing demand in the U.S., which might eventually cause a downturn in pricing and spark a potential crisis in the market.

This article was edited by Samburaj Das.

MORE OF:
CORONAVIRUS
UNITED STATES

DON'T MISS:
Dow Rallies on Fed Liquidity as Bulls Ignore ‘FOMO Bubble’ Warnings
Hong Kong’s Coronavirus Claim Is a Problem for the Stock Market
5 Reasons Coronavirus is Way Worse than You’ve Been Led to Believe
LATEST NEWS:
Love Is in the Air in Apex Legends as Duos Make a Welcome Return
Love Is in the Air in Apex Legends as Duos Make a Welcome Return
Vagrant Story Was Better Than FFVII and More Deserving of a Remake
Vagrant Story Was Better Than FFVII and More Deserving of a Remake
Rage Against The Machine Is Getting Too Old For This
Rage Against The Machine Is Getting Too Old For This
Hong Kong’s Coronavirus Claim Is a Problem for the Stock Market
Hong Kong’s Coronavirus Claim Is a Problem for the Stock Market
5 Reasons Coronavirus is Way Worse than You’ve Been Led to Believe
5 Reasons Coronavirus is Way Worse than You’ve Been Led to Believe
Crude Oil Crashes to 13-Month Low Amid Devastating Supply Shock
Crude Oil Crashes to 13-Month Low Amid Devastating Supply Shock
3 Hypocritical Oscars Moments That Prove Hollywood Has Lost Its Mind
3 Hypocritical Oscars Moments That Prove Hollywood Has Lost Its Mind
Dow Rallies on Fed Liquidity as Bulls Ignore ‘FOMO Bubble’ Warnings
Dow Rallies on Fed Liquidity as Bulls Ignore ‘FOMO Bubble’ Warnings
BioWare Is Planning a Bold No Man’s Sky-Style Overhaul of Anthem
BioWare Is Planning a Bold No Man’s Sky-Style Overhaul of Anthem
BTS’ Creative Freedom Has Finally Been Unleashed
BTS’ Creative Freedom Has Finally Been Unleashed
Tesla is Risking Lives by Reopening Gigafactory Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
Tesla is Risking Lives by Reopening Gigafactory Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
Redskins Bros Whine for the Most Hilarious – and Depressing – Reasons
Redskins Bros Whine for the Most Hilarious – and Depressing – Reasons
Xbox Chief Phil Spencer Reveals His VR Strategy – And Boy, Is It Cynical
Xbox Chief Phil Spencer Reveals His VR Strategy – And Boy, Is It Cynical
Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Can’t Hide Their Secret Ambitions
Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Can’t Hide Their Secret Ambitions
3 Reasons Why the Stock Market is Headed for a Devastating Crash
3 Reasons Why the Stock Market is Headed for a Devastating Crash
Share
Tweet

Is irony or despair

Is irony or despair the best way to process the news that “real” was the most used word on Tinder bios in 2019? People are constructing advertisements for their hearts on a platform where their face will be viewed by thousands of people for the fraction of a second it takes to totally reject them. All the while, they say things like “I’m real,” or “I’m looking for something real” or “you better be real.”

Tinder released a summary of all the data it collected from its users over the past year. And leaving out all of the creepy stuff it keeps tabs on – like, your exact location when you get horny for attention and affection, what you do on other apps like Facebook and Instagram, and the exact phrasing of your awkward attempts at flirting with strangers – and then sells to advertisers, it presented us with “The Year in Swipe: What 2019 Taught Us About the Future of Dating.”

And what does it tell us about dating? Other than it’s a hell we all acknowledge but can’t seem to escape? The big revelations includes the fact that Generation Z – someone please come up with a better name for this – reference politics more than travel, probably because the generation includes those 24 or younger and most of them don’t have any money at the moment. Believing in something is free, after all. And people like to spell out their particular dietary preferences, with “kombucha,” “vegan,” and “avocado” all increasing in usage from the previous year.

What that actually says about dating is that it is the same as it always was. People tend to date and mate with people who share the same political beliefs, so flashing AOC or RBG’s initials on your profile, a very popular thing to do in 2019, is just a quick way to weed out all the alt-right or Trump supporters in the sea of daters. If you do fight on your first date, if a message on the app leads to a date which it most likely won’t, it’s probably going to be about whether the Irishman was the most boring movie of the year. (“I don’t know, I think I lost consciousness for like an hour of it, nothing was happening.” “The Irishman is a profound study of a man’s inability to participate in the intimacy...” Date picks up their phone and starts texting.)

People also tend to date people with similar socioeconomic backgrounds, and food has become an easy way to determine which class you belong to, without just announcing your salary to all other Tinder users. Kombucha is about five or six times the price of a can of soda, avocado prices have almost doubled over the past year, and vegans tend to be more financially affluent than meat eaters. Food preferences then become a kind of class signifier, a nicer way of saying “No poors, no fattys.” And I’ve seen language like that on the app a lot, but that will never make one of these surveys.

In other words, people couple (or throuple or whatever poly people do) up in the same way they have for generations, the app simply changes the way that coupling looks. A much more entertaining, and illuminating, survey of Tinder data might be how people actually experience the app. How many people experience soul death when they log into their accounts, how many people have been sexually assaulted by people they met through the app, how the whole format of Tinder creates obstacles to commitment or intimacy, how many unsolicited dick pics and harassing messages and emotional abuse people have to wade through on their journey to love.

But it’s the word “real” in an incredibly fake environment – where you know the vast majority of people are using face-tuned selfies and photos from when they were five years younger and outright deception in their bios – that gets to me. “Real” bios, “real” photos, “real” height if you’re a man, unless you really are tall and hot and fascinating, are only going to get you discarded faster.

A few weeks after we met on Tinder, Nicolás told me a friend ran an intervention on his Tinder bio. He wasn’t getting much attention, and his wise female friend informed him that he was too honest about his belief in social justice, his experiences as an immigrant in the United States, his passion for soccer and jiu jitsu. He needed to tone it down. His profile, when I came across it, was much pared down. It kind of just said he liked coffee. He disclosed his height because that was frequently the first question women asked and he was tired of answering it over and over. He added a picture of himself with a cat.

little-known and lig

little-known and lightly regulated online school is offering students a three-year degree in the law with just one catch: They won’t be allowed to be lawyers after they graduate.

Venessa Wong
Venessa Wong
BuzzFeed News Reporter
Updated on October 31, 2019, at 9:52 p.m. ET
Posted on October 31, 2019, at 10:12 a.m. ET
What if you spent three years in law school, taking classes in contracts, torts, and constitutional law, and paying more than $11,000 a year, but — here’s the twist — at the end of it you weren't a lawyer? That's what a small number of online law schools are offering with a degree called the Executive Juris Doctor. The schools explain upfront that students won't be eligible to practice law but can use their “advanced legal training in one of the many law-related areas.” Yet many students find that what seems like it could be a leg up amounts to little more than an expensive education in the difference one letter makes.

“I finished July 26 and am looking for a job. I could scream because instead of getting a JD degree qualifying me to take the California Bar, I settled for the underdog degree, EJD. This is a non-bar attorney degree. No one knows what the f--- it is and trying to describe it makes you look like a goddamned fool. Yeah, I screwed myself it appears,” Copperas Cove, Texas, resident Brenda Cuney told BuzzFeed News.

In 2019, Cuney received her degree from Concord Law School, an unaccredited online law school based in Los Angeles, which since 2018 has been part of Purdue University Global, the online arm of the public university in Indiana. She took out the full cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses in student loans, hoping that after she graduated she would land a solid paralegal position. Concord’s website promised to “enhance your career by developing legal expertise.” But in the end, she was left with a degree few — if any — employers recognized, no more of an ability to become a paralegal than when she started, and more than $60,000 in loans (on top of existing debt for her bachelor’s degree). She now works as a substitute teacher, earning roughly $80 per day.

And even though Concord was clear with Cuney about the limitations of the program, legal experts aren’t clear why the program is offered at all. There’s no such thing as an Executive Dentist’s degree, after all (at least that we know of) — where students take dental classes but can’t become dentists. Concord’s EJD program seems built to take advantage of prospects like Cuney — admitting applicants whose test scores are too low for Concord’s JD program, but charging them almost the same tuition to attend the same classes taught by the same instructors, sitting in many of the same online rooms with JD students. The only difference? EJD students like Cuney won’t be allowed to become attorneys at the end of the program.

"It is definitely a made-up thing.”
And while few in the legal education community have heard of the EJD, those whom BuzzFeed News contacted raised concerns about whether the school was exploiting students like Cuney by offering the degree. Bob Shireman, formerly deputy undersecretary of education for then-president Barack Obama and now senior fellow and director of higher education excellence at the Century Foundation, said, “I asked my wife, who is a lawyer, and one of my colleagues [about the EJD] and they were like, what? That seems misleading. Or wrong. Or inappropriate. I looked at the [Law School Admission Council] list of types of law degrees, and it’s not there. There’s JD, LLM, legal certificate programs, MS. It is definitely a made-up thing.”

“When I turned 50, I realized I really haven't done anything of what I wanted to do, and maybe I should think about going back to school,” Cuney said. In 2012, Cuney, who has been working in risk management at a Temple, Texas, hospital, enrolled in a bachelor’s program at Kaplan, after which she contemplated earning a Master of Legal Science degree. “Then I thought, well if I’m going to do that, then why don’t I go to law school?” She looked at online JD programs, as she still had to balance school with work.

“At the time that I was looking at it and researching it, I didn't know a lot about accreditation versus non-accreditation of law schools. And I certainly didn't know about the EJD.”

Within a few days of taking a Concord-administered exam that it calls a “mini-LSAT,” which it requires of both its JD and EJD applicants in lieu of the standard LSAT exam, Cuney was informed she had been accepted into Concord’s EJD program instead of the JD.

Concord Law School / Via concordlawschool.edu
“Well, my heart sunk. My thought was, apparently you're stupid. You're not cut out to go to the JD is what they're trying to tell you.” (Concord confirmed that its EJD program requires lower scores on the exam than its JD does.)

Looking back, she feels like she “just kind of got coaxed and talked into doing this EJD program.”

Cuney’s experience does not seem to have been unique to her. In one online review, a former student said, “In my opinion, we EJD students were viewed as lesser, JD unqualified and JD wanna-be students.” Another student who planned to drop out of the program wrote, “I study a modified version of the JD track and could earn a degree of uncertain value after three years...I will get as much by reading them on my own.”

In 2015, Cuney took out the full cost of attendance in federal student loans and enrolled.

Interleague action used to be one of the most exciting chunks of schedule during the long and grueling MLB season. After months of the same ol' divisional rivalries and league showdowns, baseball bettors got a brief breath of fresh air when the American and National Leagues would collide.

But, much like the way the Star Wars franchise was watered down, interleague play was ruined by Major League Baseball wanting to capitalize on the popularity of these AL vs. NL battles.

Now, interleague play isn’t just reserved for a few weeks on the calendar – it’s happening almost every day. In fact, interleague became so diluted that MLB.com stopped updating their historical records and stats section for these senior-versus-junior circuit clashes back in 2012.

As of Monday, which features MLB-wide interleague games, there have already been 89 interleague contests played this season, with the AL holding a slight 48-41 edge over its NL opponents.

“I think it's a completely different animal now that we see interleague play on a daily basis,” says Covers Expert Sean Murphy. “Teams don't seem to be changing their approach as much when hopping leagues.”

Interleague games offered something different for the industry. It threw a bit of a curveball at books and bettors, who had to factor in how a starting pitcher would hit in limited plate appearance or what the impact would be if an NL squad suddenly had a designated hitter. There was an aura of the unknown, which leveled the playing field when it came to finding added value in those interleague moneyline and totals.

There are factors some handicappers still size up when breaking down the odds for American-National affairs, especially when it comes to sending an AL pitcher to the plate for one of their few career at-bats.

“This does make a huge difference and I try to typically avoid AL teams playing in NL parks unless they have a decided edge in starting pitching or if the NL team is just a bad one,” says Covers Expert Bryan Power of Power Sports. “Weak-hitting American League teams can be a good Under bet in NL parks while strong-hitting NL teams can be a good Over bet in AL parks.”

However, due to the oversaturation of interleague action in the modern MLB era, some bettors are treating these games the same as any other divisional or league matchup.

“It has been occurring long enough now where the teams are getting comfortable with the different venues and format,” says Covers Expert Steve Merril. “I handicap the games the same as regular in-league play using matchups, momentum, and current form.”

Heading into this week, the most successful interleague squads this season have been the Toronto Blue Jays (6-3), Houston Astros (4-1), Los Angeles Dodgers (3-0), and San Francisco Giants (4-1), while the bottom of the interleague barrel features the Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4), Cincinnati Reds (1-7), and Seattle Mariners (1-4), and Baltimore Orioles (1-4).

Playing Games with Women? Don’t Overdo It by playboy You all know that one of the fundamental things you need to do to keep a woman interested is to not give too much too soon. A popular way to achieve this is what I like to refer to as "playing the game". When you’re "playing the game", you’re trying to artificially create an aura of mystery around yourself. You wait 7 days before you call. You hold back on giving personal information.rn You hold back on giving compliments. You even hold back on getting physical. Etc. The purpose of this "game" is to tease your woman and raise her interest level to the point she will stop at nothing to find out more about you. Does "the game" work? Well, yes. Kinda. Sorta. As long as you understand that "the game" is all about using common sense! Here’s the deal: there is a fine line between being mysterious and being a bonehead. If you hold back too much and make yourself too unavailable, the woman will eventually lose interest! How much can you "push it"? I really don’t have a clue. Generally (and I am only speaking out of personal experience) the more mature the woman and the more she knows what she’s looking for, the less tolerant she will be to "the game."Then again, different people have different tolerance levels, but I can guarantee you that everybody can only put up with so much abuse. Just take yourself as an example. How long will you bang your head against a wall before you give up? Case in point: I recently had the pleasure of dating a 25 year-old woman who told me she dumped a guy because he was playing it hard to get! She saw right through it and decided not to waste her time on immaturity. He thought he was "teasing" her while, in fact, he was digging his own grave. By the way, my first date with this woman ended with a hug, the second ended with a kiss, and the third ended in her bed. Was this too fast? No. Was she using me and controlling me? Again, no. To be fair, I have to say that this relationship didn’t last because: I stopped being a challenge figured she was mine and stopped focusing on making myself attractive became way too available and basically gave her all the control When I found out she was cheating on me, I dumped her on the spot, so at least you can say I knew when to take the control back to my hands.I know some of you may argue that everything was planned. That the witchy woman just put her evil spell on me and played me like a fiddle. I don’t buy that! I take full responsibility for losing that woman and I will not make the same mistake again, but that didn’t convince me that playing mind games is the way to go!Call me naive, but I truly believe that women are looking for more-or-less the same things we do: We want to be treated with respect. So do they. We want to have an exciting relationship. So do they. We want an active partner, not a pet. So do they. I guess I’m rambling a bit, but the point of all this is simple: You want to build your relationship gradually. You want to be a challenge. You want to keep your woman interested in you. This is all good! What you don’t want to do is "play the game" too much because you just might shoot yourself in the foot. https://cnnnext.com
