Human trafficking is one of the world’s fastest growing criminal activities.

More than 20 million people worldwide are victims of this form of modern day slavery.

Statistics show that Los Angeles is an American epicenter for human trafficking, with more victims coming forward each year.

That’s why Los Angeles officials and activists are launching a new campaign to raise awareness about human trafficking.

Kay Buck with the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking says victims need to know there is help available.

The campaign includes posters and billboards posted along Los Angeles highways.

Victims will have access to a 24 hour help line along with other assistance.

Human trafficking survivors say the campaign will help educate the public about the realities of this crime.

The campaign will soon spread to other states but officials say they wanted to start in Los Angeles, where the majority of people are trafficked.

Authorities say human trafficking is a difficult crime to investigate because victims are often afraid to come forward.

Flor Molina says she hopes this campaign will help to change that.

Officials estimate that worldwide, the human trafficking industry generates an estimated 150 billion dollars each year.
