Government lawyers told an appeals court Thursday the memo outlining the US' justifications for its "targeted-killing" program should be redacted due to national security issues.
After pressure from The New York Times and the American Civil Liberties Union, a panel of federal judges ruled in April the highly controversial document must be made public.
Critics contend the public has a right to know the legal reasoning allowing the killing of American citizens without a trial, an issue brought to light after the 2011 assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen.
