The United Nations Security Council has held a three-hour meeting behind closed doors to discuss the crisis in Syria.

After the meeting, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin slammed the US and other countries for criticizng Syria for proceeding with its scheduled Presidential Election on June 3rd.

When addressing the press after the meeting, Syrian envoy to the UN Bashar Jaafari described the United States as hypocritical, for supporting foreign-backed terrorists in Syria, while claiming to oppose them in Nigeria.

He also accused Israel of supporting the insurgents in Syria.

Bill Dores, a political analyst with the International Action Center, says that the United States is responsible for the ongoing violence in Syria as it increases its support for the insurgents.

The meeting was overshadowed by news regarding the resignation of the joint UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhar Brahimi.

His resignation was announced by the UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon on Thursday.
