    Full Story:

A Thai police officer was arrested on Sunday for allegedly smuggling 20 elephant tusks.

Local authorities were tipped by an international NGO and police pulled over police captain Somkuan Buasawai in the Chumporn province, almost 300 miles south of Bangkok.

The elephant tusks were found in the vehicle, hidden in fertilizer bags.

Police also found an unregistered firearm and ammunition.

The police captain now in custody is a deputy inspector from the Songkla province.

He has been charged with violating Thailand's Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act.

According to police, Buasawai said he was hired to smuggle the tusks into Thailand for 40,000 baht, or around $1,300.

The value of the tusks may be several million baht.
