www.euronews.com/ Perhaps already starting his campaign for a political comeback, former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has criticised his successor for following policies that are too "German-centric".

Berlusconi's comments attack the technocratic government and Mario Monti, who has announced his intention to resign.

During a telephone interview on Monday evening, Berlusconi criticised the focus on the difference

between Italian and benchmark German bonds

    - known as the spread.

"There's no real reason why the markets should be agitated.

Of what concern is the spread? Let's stop talking about this scam.

We've only been talking about the spread for a year," he said.

After losing support from Berlusconi's centre-right PDL party, Monti said he would step down as soon as the government's budget and financial stability law received parliamentary approval.

However, that may not be the end of his political career.

He also says he would like to influence debates in the future, regardless of what actual role he plays after elections next year.
