NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia continued his resurgence with his best start of the season while Didi Gregorius and Chris Carter homered off reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello, leading the Yankees to an 8-0 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

Sabathia picked up the victory for his fifth consecutive start, permitting just five hits over eight scoreless innings, a 95-pitch gem that restored New York's lead in the AL East to two games over Boston.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Muscling up: The Yankees have gotten league-worst production from their first basemen this season, but Carter's bat may be heating up. After singling in his first at-bat and mistakenly advancing to an occupied base to force an error, Carter blasted a three-run homer, narrowly missed another homer in the sixth when Mookie Betts made a leaping catch at the right-field wall and added an RBI single in the eighth.

"I'm just trying to not jump out at the ball," Carter said. "When I got a pitch away, I would lean toward it or go after it. I'm just trying to stay balanced and stay in place."

DETROIT -- Buck Farmer and Alex Meyer quieted the offenses before Justin Upton's three-run homer in the eighth turned an unlikely pitching duel into a 4-0 Tigers win over the Angels on Wednesday at Comerica Park.

Farmer (2-0), who tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings against the White Sox in a spot start a week and a half ago, stretched his scoreless-innings streak to 13 by holding the Angels to three hits -- all singles --- with two coming with two outs. In his 6 2/3 innings, the Tigers' righty didn't allow a runner to reach scoring position, erasing Albert Pujols' leadoff single in the seventh with a double play to help Detroit post its first shutout of the season MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Error sets up first run: Though Meyer set up the first run-scoring rally with a Kinsler hit-by-pitch and an Alex Avila walk, it took a Yunel Escobar error at third base to put the opening tally in place. His mishandle on Miguel Cabrera's chopper loaded the bases with nobody out, allowing Victor Martinez's ensuing double play to score Kinsler rather than end the inning.
